Black Sun by Graham Brown

Black Sun (Hawker & Laidlaw #2) by Graham Brown (Narrated by Jeffrey Kafer)

Action & Adventure Ooze Out Of This One

4.5 out of 5 stars

It’s been quite a while since I read the first book in this series, but something drew me to it the other day (I read this the week before Clive Cussler passed away – Brown writes one of the series with Cussler, pretty crazy!). I’m glad it did, because this book was a blast to listen to. Graham Brown really knocks the action and adventure out of the park in this series.

Black Sun deals with Mayan stones that are emitting massive waves of energy. Of course, there are those who want to harvest and use this energy for evil and then there’s the good guys. But, Brown is able to write this story and include such great story and character building that it turns it from a “of course that’s the plot” kind of book to a “woah, I didn’t see that coming” one.

I think the thing I enjoyed the most about Black Sun was the way that Brown included a ton of history and a lot of the prophecy and conspiracy theories that are familiar to readers. The “Mayan Prophecies” along with the date December 21st 2012 will both be familiar to anyone that was alive during that time. But the way that Brown includes them in Black Sun really took it to another level.

This being the second book in the Hawker & Laidlaw series really stepped it up a notch. And without ruining too much, the way that this book ended left me shook. But in all sincerity, Brown left it open ended enough that I really want to know how the next book goes.  Not even for the obvious adventure and action that he’ll include. But to see how Hawker and Laidlaw continue.

From Graham Brown, co-author of the New York Times best-selling thriller Devil’s Gate with Clive Cussler, comes Black Sun…

In the heart of the Amazon, NRI operative Danielle Laidlaw makes an incredible discovery: a translucent Mayan stone generating massive waves of energy while counting down toward the infamous apocalyptic date: December 21, 2012. And somewhere, there are three more just like it.

What power will be unleashed if all four stones come together? Who created them – and who has them now? Using a cryptic Mayan map and a prophecy that points to the end of the world, Danielle and her team race toward answers. But one staggering question remains: Were these artifacts meant to save us – or to destroy us once and for all?
