A Heartwarming Journey of Friendship and Love

5 out of 5 stars

Down to a Science by Haley Cass is an enchanting audiobook that captivates listeners with its compelling characters, heartwarming friendships, and tender romance. This story kept me hooked from start to finish, leaving me yearning for more.

The strength of this book lies in its exceptional main characters, Ellie and Mia. Both women are intricately developed, with complex lives and unique personalities, issues, and struggles. Their friendship blossoms beautifully throughout the narrative, evoking an overwhelming sense of warmth, affection, and, the best part… understanding. It’s one of the most endearing friendships I’ve encountered in a long time, making investing in their journey easy.

The slow-burn romance in Down to a Science is masterfully crafted, teasing readers with delightful “will they” moments that keep the anticipation alive until the very end. Haley Cass skillfully weaves the threads of their connection, allowing their chemistry to simmer and intensify as the story progresses (from both sides, too). The yearning and longing between Ellie and Mia are palpable, making their eventual HEA all the more satisfying.

At the beginning of the book, I detected echoes of two other books I enjoyed, namely HOWL: Home of the Wayward Lovers by Lucy Bexley and The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood. However, as the story unfolded, Down to a Science took these initial resemblances and skillfully subverted them, forging its own unique path. It’s a testament to the author’s ability to craft a story that surprises and delights readers.

One aspect that stood out to me was the inclusion of neurodivergent themes without specifically calling them out. Cass handles these themes with sensitivity and authenticity, highlighting the nuances and challenges faced by these individuals. The misunderstandings that arise due to sarcasm and communication barriers add depth and realism to the characters, further enriching their development.

Down to a Science beautifully incorporates elements of Pride into the narrative. Experiencing a character’s first Pride celebration is a joyous and poignant moment (for a while), and the audiobook allows listeners to immerse themselves in this special experience. The celebration of identity and the sense of community resonates powerfully, making it a memorable aspect of the story.

Overall, Down to a Science is undeniably one of the standout sapphic books of the year. Haley Cass has crafted a masterpiece that skillfully blends heartwarming friendships, a slow-burn romance, and thought-provoking themes. This audiobook elicited various emotions, and I found myself shedding tears of joy and heartache. If you’re searching for a moving and beautifully written story, this should be at the top of your reading list.
