Okay, Hotshot…

4.5 out of 5 stars

Clare Lydon’s Hotshot is a standout sapphic romance that scores big with its heartfelt storytelling and engaging characters. Lydon, known for her charming and relatable stories, delivers another winner with this soccer-themed romance — this time between a performance/player-coach (and former player) and a new “hotshot” American player. This is now the third story from Lydon I’ve read and I have a few more in the queue. Each one has left me smiling and Hotshot was no different.

What sets Hotshot apart is its focus on genuine emotion and realistic relationships. Both main characters are well-developed and have their own lives and passions, making their connection feel authentic and meaningful. The story is refreshingly low-angst, with any moments of tension feeling organic and well-paced. I could tell they were coming and they felt both authentic and incredibly real. The things that frustrated Ella were things that should have frustrated her. And on the flip side of that Sloane’s situation with her fiancee added such an interesting twist on things because it showed how things can fall apart or be completely broken for longer than anyone realizes.

Lydon’s skillful writing shines through in the way she handles the characters’ conversations and emotions. The story unfolds naturally, sparks fly, but they are tamped down — but you can’t help but root for the romance to blossom.

Katy Sobey’s narration adds another layer of enjoyment to the audiobook. Her performance brings out the best in each character, enhancing Lydon’s words and making the story come alive.

One of the most impressive aspects of Hotshot is Lydon’s ability to capture American and British perspectives. I can tell that this wasn’t easy given how different our cultures are. Lydon even mentions this at the end of the book which I found to be incredibly transparent. The honesty and difference add depth to the characters and the story, showcasing the differences and similarities between the two cultures.

Overall, Hotshot is a winning romance that left me smiling. Lydon’s storytelling continues to impress, and Sobey’s narration is the perfect complement. This audiobook is a must-listen for fans of sapphic romance, earning a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.
