What A Story. MUCH More Than “Just” Romance.
5 out of 5 stars
This review took me a little bit to write – Illusion Lake was so much more than a story about two people falling in love. It’s a story about a long and crazy corruption ring that will do almost anything for a big payday. Little did they know what kind of payday it would be.
I picked this one up because I loved the scenery on the cover, and at first, I was pretty sure this took place in Canada. The author, from a quick search, appears to be from Canada. There were a few lines early that made me think this was taking place there (I believe an American told her that the washroom was somewhere, now as much as I want to start using washroom, we’d say bathroom or restroom here – it did NOT take away from the story and I only noticed because I’m friends with some Canadian authors and narrators, along with living a few minutes from the border). I only mention this because I kept having to remind myself that Elliott, while from Toronto, flew to the states to deal with her Great Uncle’s estate.
I thought the town drama, intermixed with the learning to fall for someone, the antique planes, and the family history – Illusion Lake has something for everyone. Both Elliott and Kiva were excellent main characters. They each brought their own flair to the friendships (then later to the relationship), and they were both a breeze to read.
Of course, the whole story was taken up a notch by the excellent performance by Melissa Moran, one of my favorite narrators. She does a wonderful job bringing the women to life and giving an already great story another step up.
Book Description:
A secret consortium, a bent banker, and a desperate lawyer are all that stand between Elliott Snowmaker and the inheritance of her great-uncle’s failing aircraft restoration business. Elliott doesn’t think twice about leaving her home in Toronto and making the long trip to New Mexico and Illusion Lake. Once there, she soon discovers that somebody wants her gone, and gone fast.
Staying was not the plan. But there’s something about Illusion Lake that definitely deserves her consideration. Besides, her new lawyer is hot as hell and worth a second or third look too.
Kiva Park is only at Illusion Lake for the winter. With a thriving criminal practice up north, handling the mundane chores of her dad’s general law office is a little on the dull side. But her plans for a quiet winter fly out the window when Elliott walks in the door. Elliott sets off all sorts of bells, but most disturbing is the way Kiva wants to reach out and brush Elliott’s bangs from those captivating blue eyes.
But with everyone gunning for her new client, it doesn’t take long for Kiva to figure out that there’s much more than Elliott’s inheritance and her own heart that are at risk.
