Yeah, This Was Awesome

5 out of 5 stars

Going into “Once Upon A Galactic Time,” I knew two things. One, it was performed by one of my favorite narrators, Abby Craden. And two, it was “edgy Sci-Fi with a kick-ass female lead.” Honestly, I was sold. I’ve never read anything by N.D. Shar, but I had a feeling I was going to enjoy it, especially having enjoyed other edgy sci-fi stories with similar female leads (like the Dragon Mage series from Scott Baron and most of C.T. Phipps’ cyberpunk/noir stories)

“Once Upon A Galactic Time” is a story that doesn’t mince words, Shar dives right into it, and I was hooked within the first few minutes. Craden’s performance helped, but Shar really threw us into Red’s new adventure right away, and I loved it.

As I mentioned, this gets right into it and doesn’t hold back. Shar was able to write a story that kept me wondering what was going to happen next and, while doing it, intermixed a few romance/flirting scenes along with one steamy scene too. I felt like I hit the jackpot with this book. The best part is it’s only getting started. I hope that Tantor, Shar, and Craden team up for the rest because I want to know where Commander Red takes us in the coming books.

Basically, I died

My name is Storm Redfield: Navy Commander, Special Forces.

Born on Earth in the year 2057, I don’t belong in the twenty-third century. Nevertheless, that’s where I end up following the worst betrayal of all by my own people. During my time asleep, humanity has become a spacefaring civilization. We are no longer alone in the universe, and the galaxy is at peace . . . more or less. Now, I have a choice to make.

Call it a day after a traumatic rebirth, and spend the rest of my life on a Martian beach, sipping margaritas? Or grab myself a weapon, and go kick ass with the civilian outfit that brought me back? Good question, easy answer: with a name like mine . . .

Sheltering from the squalls of life is no option.
