A Tangled Dance of Love and Politics
4 out of 5 stars
The Politician by Emma Nichols weaves a captivating tale of ambition, love, and the tumultuous world of British politics, what it means to dream, and also what it’s like to have the potential to lose yourself in search of what you thought you were supposed to be doing.
The story revolves around Sarah Thompson, an ambitious woman driven by her lifelong dream of becoming the Prime Minister. As her political career reaches a critical point, her path becomes entangled with Kendra, a passionate environmental activist who joins her team as a staffer while someone is out on maternity leave.
Throughout this entire story (except the last few chapters) I wasn’t sure how I felt about Sarah and Kendra getting together. It had a lot of red flags that became yellow or green as the story progressed. I felt like the sacrifices each character must make for the relationship to flourish would be too big to overcome.
Nichols skillfully built up the suspense, keeping me engaged and occasionally questioning whether a happy ending was in store for the protagonists. This element of unpredictability added an exciting layer to the story, preventing it from becoming predictable or formulaic.
I thought the performance by Jessica Jeffries deserves commendation for bringing the story to life. Her added details and nuances enhanced the overall experience for me.
Overall, despite the uncertainty surrounding the characters’ romantic fate, I enjoyed the story, commending Nichols for her adept storytelling and the heightened tension throughout.
From an early age, Sarah Thompson’s life has been driven by her ambition to become prime minister. The leadership of her party and the country is tantalizingly within reach when a new assistant, Kendra, joins her team. Sarah’s growing fascination for the young outspoken environmental activist makes it impossible to resist temptation. As the threat to Sarah’s career gains momentum, she must navigate a tangled web of love and loyalty, or she will lose everything.
Kendra’s passion for the environment is as strong as her instant attraction to her boss, Sarah. She knows there can be no future in such a relationship but her heart refuses to listen. As their love deepens, Kendra is subjected to the dark side of politics. Lies and deception are spun through Westminster to keep them apart.
What will it take for Sarah not just to win the election, but to win back the love of her life?
From the internationally bestselling author of Elodie and Rock My Heart, Emma Nichols brings a steamy contemporary lesbian romance that takes the listener on a journey through the shadows of British politics and into the wonderfully sensual backdrop of Khao Sok National Park in Thailand.
