Shockwave

Fast-Paced Politically Fueled Sci-Fi

4 out of 5 stars

Having read Requiem of a Nightmare first, it was a bit weird to go out of order and read the first book, Shockwave… but not too weird. A lot of the things that I said in my review of the second book were true for this one.

Spires did a good job of introducing the characters, the story, and the overall premise without spending an hour doing just that. He was able to get into the fast-paced action of the story pretty quickly and not drawing out each interaction to the point of being boring. I touched on this a bit in my first review, but the story leans a bit political but is done in a way that it doesn’t feel like a direct attack on any political affiliation since he does it with alien races instead of humans. Still it was borderline for me and would definitely bother others.

The biggest thing that I thought book two was missing was a lot of the “why”. Thankfully going back and reading Shockwave has given me a lot of the why’s and allowed me to enjoy the story that much more.

The thing that really shined in both stories I’ve read so far was the combination of Spires action scenes and Brown’s narration. He was able to really add a lot of depth to this story where if I’d read it myself (or some other narrators) may have read it flatter. Brown’s narration really helped this book shine.

It’ll be weird going from book 2 to 1 to 3, but I will be checking out this series and continuing it.
