Excellent. So Much Emotion.

5 out of 5 stars

I finished up the fifth book in the series, The Bright Beast, so I knew what I was in for. But this was so much more.

You know it’s going to be a tearjerker when the narrator, Steve Campbell, tweets you this:

I have lots of thoughts about The Bright Escape; I can’t talk about a lot of them because it would be a major spoiler, not only for this book but for the rest of the series. I just want to applaud Knowles’ ability to write characters, story arcs, and entire series’ that make me fall in love with everything about them. I thought that I’d found everything there was to love about the Bright Lord or the people and animals around him, but I wasn’t even CLOSE to done yet.

I give a slight spoiler warning because this thing happens later in the book, but I need to talk around it a bit. There’s a scene about being “drawn” to someone that happens later on that for about 30 minutes straight, I had this goofy smile on my face. Knowles could write about really difficult and “landmine-like” topics around love and soulmates without ever really using those terms. While a complete cut-out from the rest of the book, I think this scene stood out to me. Even at the moment, I felt like Knowles was just making sure I had a smile on my face before sprinting towards the finale of this book.

I can’t talk about the last parts of the book, but I’ll send a bill for tissues to Knowles and Campbell (only slightly kidding). Knowles wrote just picture-perfect scenes. And Campbell added the emotion, love, loss, etc., to each without overdoing it. Which is MUCH harder than you’d think.

Overall, yeah, I loved it. A fiveish hour book that genuinely felt like a 10-hour one. Knowles was able to cram so much into such a small package. It felt like getting a tiny box on Christmas only to open it and find a key to something much bigger.
