5 out of 5 stars
There’s something that makes me happy reading a book like Then & Now. The characters are so well thought out that I can predict some of their moves but it doesn’t feel like I’m ruining the book for myself. I went back to the other McCallan book that I finished (The Flaw in Our Design) and one of the first lines I wrote about that book works well for this one, too. “McCallan did a great job of writing two characters that I absolutely fell head-over-heels in love with and wanted both of them to succeed.” I felt that way about this too.
Lily was the easier to like right away. Her character was wonderful and earnest. She was succeeding because she tried had and wanted to. On the other hand, Bennett wasn’t hard to like or anything, she was actually the more fun of the two when the flashbacks happened – but the struggle that she had and the things that happened between her and Lily made her the more difficult one to fall for. I love that McCallan is able to pull that off because I think that as a reader when you see the same flaws and struggles that the main character does – it’s almost like you’re there with them in the moment. It’s not easy to pull off, but McCallan does it flawlessly.
Then & Now was an interesting story of first loves, loves that got away, and growing because of those two things. It’s also about prejudices and “family appearances”. I love the deepness and complexities that are woven into this story. It makes it feel so real. Add in the narration by the always easy to listen to Lori Prince and you’ve got a book I finished in 2-3 sittings.
Lily Connor has focused all her energy into becoming a successful wedding planner, and after five years, she’s on the precipice of taking on more responsibility at Southerland Wedding Company. When the chance finally presents itself, it comes with a complication she couldn’t have dreamt up in her worst nightmares. With the bride and groom away for a month, Lily needs to work with the bride’s best friend, Bennett Burke, a woman she never thought she’d see again.
It was only for a few months, a study abroad experience that felt plucked from those same dreams turned nightmares, but Bennett is back, and Lily wants nothing to do with her. Bennett broke her heart the first time, and Lily swore she’d never let something like that happen again.
Working together can’t be avoided, but falling in love? Lily needs to stop that at all costs, even if it comes at the sake of her own happiness.
Contains mature themes.
