Beautiful Scenery, Excellent Adventure

5 out of 5 stars

Only because I stumbled upon a TikTok did I realize that this would be as much an adventure book as it would be a sapphic romance. And I loved every second of it. Morley did a great job writing characters that jumped off of the page. And placing them into one of the prettiest places I’ve ever visited. There was a line early in the book about tourists, especially cruise ship tourists, and I couldn’t help but laugh. I remember having to yell at some of them in the EXACT place that Morley mentioned. I thought, “well, living here would be a challenge with the tourists, but you also have to love them because they keep money coming into the town.” I enjoyed Morley writing that feeling/scene and got a good chuckle.

Under The Sitka Sky was a beautifully written story about two friends coming back together after many years but throwing them into a terrifying situation. Stranded after a plane crash, they must figure out how to survive and care for each other. All while exploring old and new feelings.

I don’t want to ruin any scenes here, but I just wanted to call out that I love that one character needed time and space to make decisions and that the other one was able to give that to her, no questions asked. Their feelings on both sides were validated, putting a big cheesy grin on my face every time it came up.

A story that jumped off the page and was turned into a great audiobook by the excellent performance by Everly. I thought Under The Sitka Sky was the perfect amount of love, like, and challenges. I was chatting with my partner while reading it. I couldn’t predict the exact scenes, but I could tell how this book would go. And I’m okay with that. It had that “hallmark movie” feel, and I’m here for it. The HEA was even better – that payoff was worth the entrance fee.

Cam Porter is a charter pilot living a quiet life in the small island town of Sitka, Alaska. She’s spent most of her adult life avoiding any kind of affection and has put off romantic relationships. Her small but mighty family circle includes her exuberant dog Goose who gets her through the days between doing what she loves most, flying.

Skyler Callaghan had to leave Sitka while she was still attending high school. Despite the time and distance, a childhood crush on her best friend’s older sister never went away—a little fact she almost forgot about until an unplanned trip back home reminds her.

When the two women find themselves stranded in the Alaskan wilderness, it isn’t exactly the setting Skyler always dreamt of when she pictured nights with Cam. She tries to put her feelings aside for the sake of her sanity and survival but she feels herself being drawn even closer to Cam. As things start to shift between them, Cam has to decide if she can learn to trust and let go.
