Just Perfect

5 out of 5 stars

How You Get the Girl is a delightful and inclusive romance that celebrates the complexities of the LGBTQ+ community with humor and heart.

One of the standout aspects of this book is its exploration of Julie Parker’s journey of self-discovery. Julie’s uncertainty about her sexual orientation and possible asexuality is portrayed with sensitivity and authenticity, offering a refreshing perspective rarely seen in mainstream literature. I could really tell that Kelly wanted to cover this in a way that was approachable and also showed the confusion, hurt, and fear that comes along with it.

If that wasn’t enough Julie’s non-binary twin sibling is another highlight, showcasing a supportive and understanding familial relationship that is both heartwarming and empowering. Kelly’s ease of utilizing their proper pronouns and showing what it was like to have your family fully support you is a breath of fresh air.

On the other hand, our other main character, Elle Cochrane struggles with her past as a basketball player which adds depth to the story, providing a balance of serious issues and lighthearted romance. Both Elle and Julie bring different issues to the table and help each other work through them with unwavering support.

The dynamic between Elle and Julie is electric, their chemistry palpable from the start. As they navigate their feelings for each other amidst the backdrop of coaching a high school basketball team, their love story unfolds in a way that is both sweet and captivating. I haven’t read a book where I was this invested this quickly in a while. I loved the story, the heat, the “will they”, and the cute vibes that this gave throughout.

Overall, How You Get the Girl is a charming and inclusive sports romance that will leave you with a smile on your face. Kelly’s writing is engaging, and the characters are easy to love, making this audiobook a joy to listen to. Throw in the excellent narration by Lindsey Dorcus and Gail Shalan and this is one I won’t soon forget. One of the easiest 5-star ratings I’ve given.

Chemistry sizzles in this workplace rom-com set in the world of high school basketball as the author of Love & Other Disasters delivers a sapphic romance full of humor and heart.

When a smart-mouthed junior joins East Nashville High’s basketball team, Coach Julie Parker’s ready for the challenge. What she’s not prepared for is the teen’s new foster parent, a super-hot ex-WNBA baller and star of Julie’s fantasies. Julie knows the cool and confident Elle Cochrane is way out of her league. But despite being completely tongue-tied around her, somehow Julie persuades Elle to step in as her assistant coach.

Elle has not been on a court since her career-ending injury, but she can’t seem to resist Julie, who is just as adorable as her nervous babbling. Maybe because being around her makes Elle feel sparks for the first time in long while—which is why she offers to help when Julie reveals her lifelong insecurity about dating and how she wishes she could practice at it…like sports. As Elle helps Julie navigate dating life, lines grow increasingly blurred, and the two must decide whether they’ll stay on the sidelines—or finally take their shot.
