A Real Journey

4 out of 5 stars

Usually, in books like this, I like both leads right off the bat. But in The Missus, there wasn’t a clear “these two are right for each other” for quite a while. And to be honest, I didn’t like Keira in the opening parts of this book. Even before the dynamic changed and it was just sort of forced proximity, I had my doubts. But very quickly after that, all changed, and this went from a “what is she thinking” to a “when the heck are they going to finally realize it!”

I liked West’s approach. It played into the dynamic between them, keeping things interesting enough that there was reason to stick around. The back and forth between Allana and her ex-boyfriend (or fiance, I can’t remember) was always interesting and definitely kept my attention. Allana was definitely the shining beacon in this as her struggles with her situation as it morphs seemingly chapter by chapter was entertaining and downright made me want the best for her.

I think the combination of these elements (along with their undeniable chemistry) ends up making this “feel good” type of book without actually meaning to be one. I enjoyed it, and my feelings changed quite a bit from the opening chapters to the epilogue. I went on a real journey with this couple, and I’m happy I did. It was well worth the mileage.

This was my first book read by Lynn Harris, and I enjoyed it. I think she was able to get into the character of both Allana and Keira, but especially as Allana’s mom. Her character cracked me up and had me picturing Moira Rose from Schitt’s Creek but somehow even more of a caricature (I don’t know if that makes sense either? 🙂 ) But, I digress. I enjoyed Harris’s performance and I will be looking for more titles from her in the future.

Book Description:

Keira Evans likes an easy existence. She’s happy to remain single and wants every woman she takes to bed to know exactly what the deal is. Keira doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, nor does she want to have to take out restraining orders every week.

But when Keira is trying to pry yet another lovesick woman out the door, her next-door neighbor, Alanna Hall, decides to come to her rescue—pretending to be Keira’s serious girlfriend. Keira’s amazed by the effectiveness of the charade and becomes convinced that a fake girlfriend could be the solution to all her woes. But how the hell can she convince Alanna to take on the position of phony girlfriend full time?

With spectacular timing, Alanna finds herself abruptly homeless when her relationship implodes. And look who happens to have a bed going spare in exchange for a little quid pro quo? Alanna’s uncertain about repeating her spontaneous performance for her philandering neighbor.

Keira thinks she’s got it made now that Alanna’s ready to chase off every casual sex partner who doesn’t know when it’s time to leave. But living with Alanna creates more chaos in Keira’s perfect little world than she’s expecting.

Contains mature themes.
